If You Liked the `50s...You'll Love These Stories is a thin slice of life the way it was -- or at least the way it is remembered.
Samp's book reflects the richness of a past that overshadows the agony of current events. The simpler, less stressful times provide a strong foundation to help people cope better with today's challenges. In the 130 pages of his book, Samp tells the stories that enrich life across our region.
Flandreau, South Dakota, in the 1950s was part of Norman Rockwell's America. On endless summer days, people surrounded the popcorn stand on a corner of main Street. During homecomeing week, the snake dance stretched fromthe high school to Main Street - all 3 1/2 blocks. On long winter nights, kids gathered at The Crystal Theater under false pretense of watching some movie. Few people in flandreau or america doubted the essential goodness of their society. GI Joe and Rosie the Riveter were busy making baby boomers. some people worried about the Atomic bom, but more people worried about not having snow for Christmas. Every high school kid had or wanted one of those new transistor radios so he could love or hate those Yankees. Parents, alarmed at their children's choice in music, took consolation in the hope that rock-n-roll, poodle skirts and hoola hoops would all be passing fads. And back then real cars had tail fins, but real men did not have pony tails and earrings.
